This specialty coffee is produced in the famed Aceh region of Sumatra, by a tiny mill. Several small-scale coffee growers in the Pantan Musara communities are served by the mill. These producers were uprooted from their homes and property due to a natural calamity a few years ago, and they have since rebuilt their farms and lives with a renewed emphasis on coffee.
Aceh, in northern Sumatra, is one of the best places in the world to grow coffee. In northern Sumatra, smallholders make up 95% of the agricultural sector, the average farm size is one hectare, and 80% of producers are female. This specialty coffee is farmed amidst the jungle, on the volcanic Barisan Mountains, and near stunning beaches.
